A fashion model’s job first appears to be one of a glamorous one. But, there are many requirements to becoming a successful fashion model. While watching different television channels, you would have come across models in ads or fashion channels that have svelte and appealing shapes, and that exhibiting a great deal of poise. And in all probability you might have wished that you could also become one. It is not just the fame and attention that lures an individual to become a model, but the big money that is involved in these assignments.

Modelling is a career that needs a lot of travelling to exotic locations, attending celebrity parties and earning big dollars for every assignment. Most of the people like us want to be in the limelight, rub shoulders with some of the popular faces in the fashion circuit, and indulge in the various activities there; but modelling is much more than that, contrary to many people’s imagination. If you want to take up modelling as your career, you need to possess some appealing physical attributes. You have to first rate yourself and gauge your weaknesses and strengths that can make or mar your prospects. Nobody is perfect, but any person can work on his or her flaws and can improve on his/her plus points. For instance, a model’s height has to be at least 5’8″ or more than that, and the body weight should be in proportion to that.

Fashion models are known for their unusual or strange diets and exercise regimens. They need to undergo rigorous training methods to maintain the required body proportions required of a professional model. The skin should be glowing and healthy without any kind of scars or blemishes.  The hair should look healthy and without any kind of damages or split ends. The model’s teeth should be in the same line and not flawed in any manner. A million dollar smile has got the potential to do half the job and fetch you the much coveted assignments. However, aside from all the excitement and fun, the modelling job demands dedication, commitment and a burning interest in all the endeavours. The work schedules can be erratic; models are expected to balance their work life schedules, giving due consideration to their personal health.

You need to get noticed by a good modelling agency in order for you to grow and flourish. The agencies are always on the look out for fresh and appealing faces. And, if you happen to be at the right place at the right time, you may land yourself a lucrative contract for some modelling assignments. Do take effort to search for them, and this can give you the real impetus as you give the associated people the required push. You should send out your impressive portfolios to as many modelling agencies as possible. It is important that you make your portfolio simple yet brilliant and effective. But it is not necessary that you spend a lot of money to make an excellent portfolio.

Photography is all about an art of capturing expressions, situations and of course surroundings. However, there is an enormous factor that cannot be ignored, that is “Light”.

Light plays a major part in all kinds of photography. Nevertheless of what kind of photography you may have expertise is in, light is everything of this ‘furnished art’. Assume a freelance photographer who is looking for a successful career, it is not just to find a good model or finding a right place to shoot, but it is all about how effectively they can capture the light!

Many had faced difficulties in ‘lighting‘. Of course, all have their own ideas, vision and inspirations. However, to create a good photo, theproper use of light is always needed. Some of my photos became ruined due to ineffective use of light regardless of composition, angles and surroundings. That was my first lesson from photography.

If one can use the light and shading effectively, then no matter the surroundings, or models that is being used. That is what my experience so far!

When it comes to fashion photography, it may be devoted to displaying clothing and other fashion items. Over times, fashion photography has developed its own aesthetics in which the clothes and fashions enhanced by the presence of exotic locations or accessories. Light plays a gigantic part here. However, the presence of such exotic locations or accessories, light is an obligation to feel the exposure and hence it gets attracted. Fashion photographers must utilize the “lighting” in full extreme to make a remarkable portrait. Light and colors are the parameters used to expose an object from other objects in a frame.

Professional photographers always have a great edge on the lighting. Obviously, a successful photographer is a scientist who always digs more about light and effect in frames.

That is the reason; young photographers usually go to Art Schools and focus on photography, not only to learn about composition and angles but also to become experts in “lighting”. It is very difficult to grab the natural light and shadows and applying right combination of both into a portrait.

Bottom line is this, your “lighting” is a direct factor of your success in photography.

We can get a glimpse of fashion photography almost everywhere we look on TV, newspapers, internet and all media. Dazzling women with long legs and tanned skin scream for attention on news stands all over the place. It is the fashion photographer who is primarily responsible to bring those photographers to us, the everyday people. Unlike what one often imagines, there is more to fashion photography than a glitzy life style, fun and happening models. In fact there is a lot of planning involved behind every single fashion photograph that we see.

A name such as Mario Testino has become iconic in the realm of fashion photography. Did you know that photographers like him are just as sought after as the models that they photograph? At times the photographer is an even bigger celebrity than the model.

This profession may seem dream like to the young and enthusiastic photographer but it is not all about fun and glitz. It is not just about meeting the rich and the famous, the fat checks and the feeling of rock that goes with fashion photography. Did you know, for every one photographer that is successful, there are hundreds who are left looking for shoots for many years? Many give up after a few years while some do go on to become successful later on in life.

If you want to become a fashion photographer -

1. Learn the art well
There is no end to learning. Here is where many a youngster goes astray. they are so bothered about the style and the glamour associated with the fashion photographer, they concentrate more on looking right than shooting right. Know your photography so well that it comes naturally to you. Get books on the subject and read them to expand your knowledge of the subject.

2. Equipment
Next to the right knowledge comes the right equipment. Here is a hard truth – you cannot be a good fashion photographer unless you can afford expensive equipment. Cameras are not cheap, and you have new ones coming out every season. If you cannot afford to start off with a good camera and lighting system, your knowledge would go to waste.

3. The portfolio
The portfolio of a photographer is what finally lands the job. Make sure you have an impressive folio with your best work carefully selected. Choose the best 4 by 5 slide images you have. Some prefer to make prints. It is suggested – if you are discussing something with a photography pro, carry the slides. If it is a designer you are meeting the prints may be a better idea and more convenient for everyone.

4. Personality
Any editor is looking for original talent, so make sure you have a strong individual point of view. It is ok to be affected by another professional’s point of view, as long as you add or remove from it to make it unique and different. You need an identity!
