Fashion Photography done by KO Photography!

Fashion photography can sometimes prove to be one of the most difficult subject for photographers. Where aesthetic means everything, there are so many facets that go in to proper fashion photography.

Remember that the shots are supposed to create awe. The ideal situation would be to show the completed fashion photos to someone and watch their jaw drop. It’s always important to focus on the aesthetic when photographing fashion and dressed models—but there are a lot of things that go into this; and thus a lot of steps you can take, to make your shoots more successful.

I try to tell people to think Lady Gaga when they think fashion photography. Notice every time she appears in a magazine—it’s never a plain shot of her, but rather a motif or theme that acts to set the whole tone of the shoot. So the first thing to successfully shooting fashion is by creating a concept. Conceptually you want something that not only pleases a client, but goes above and beyond their expectations.

Once you really give a good amount of thought to your fashion photography, you can start focusing on more specifics. Where is this shoot taking place? What kind of props if any are necessary? What kind of lighting best fits the mood of the shoot, all while supporting the overall concept?

And once all the logistics are worked out—the next step, and a crucial one, is to figure out how you want your photo laid out. This is one step I feel many fashion photographers tend to miss. Make rough sketches of your ideal photos before the actual shoot. Obviously you may not be Monet, but you’re a photographer—not an artist; so don’t worry. Just make these sketches with more attention to composition or layout rather than accuracy of detail. Having these sketches in mind will help greatly during the actual shoot and will enable you to better direct your models for the best possible fashion photography shoot
